Mercury

Mercury is a naturally-occurring metal which, when released into the environment, is toxic at high levels. The main source of mercury emissions are through smelters, refineries, manufacturing plants and incinerators. Mercury is also commonly used in hospitals and other medical facilities.

Standards aimed at reducing the threat of exposure to high levels of mercury require the safe management, containment and disposal of waste products and materials containing mercury.
