For years, PCBs or polychlorinated biphenyls were used extensively in a wide range of industrial applications, including sealants, caulking compounds and paint adhesives. In particular, PCBs were widely used as coolants and lubricants in electrical transformers, capacitors and lamp ballasts.
Concern over the environmental impact of PCBs and their threat to human health led to a North America-wide ban on non-electrical uses of PCBs in 1977. Electrical applications of PCBs are now being phased out and there are strict standards governing the handling, storage and disposal of PCB-containing material.
